Prediabetes is a warning sign
Prediabetes, sometimes known as borderline diabetes, is a condition in which a person’ blood glucose level is higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be full blown type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is one of the risk factors usually present in Metabolic Syndrome (formally Syndrome X). While it is a serious condition, it can be reversed by a change in diet and lifestyle, but this will take some effort.
Prediabetes does not necessarily have symptoms. The safest course of action is to have yourself tested if you’re over 45, overweight or have a family history of diabetes.
A recent sturdy by the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) revels that prediabetes can be prevented from turning into Type 2 diabetes. Some promising drugs have been revealed, but the DPP says that diet and exercise were more effective in preventing prediabetes from developing into Type 2 diabetes than any of the drugs.
Prediabetes is a serous disease. It’s serious, but it can be treated; and by making some serious changes to diet and increasing exercise, Type 2 diabetes can very often be avoided completely or, at the very least, delayed.
Currently, the DPP is working on developing materials that will prevent prediabetics from becoming Type 2 diabetics. The idea of the materials is to help people with prediabetes understand their risks and tell them what they can do that will “turn back the clock,” so to speak, on developing Type 2 diabetes.
Diet: Making healthy food choices is one of the two most important aspects of preventing prediabetes from developing into Type 2 diabetes. Healthy food choices include choosing fresh fruits and vegetables with an emphasis on non starchy choices like spinach, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, green beans, etc.
Choosing whole grain foods over processed grain foods can make a big difference as well. Choose brown rice over white rice. Choose whole wheat spaghetti. Choose whole wheat bread. Preferably lower your carbohydrate intake from any source
Substitute lean meats like fish and chicken for higher-fat meats like beef and pork. Eat fish two or three times a week and remove the skin from chicken and turkey before it is cooked.
Exercise: There’s simply no substitute for getting up and moving. It is NEVER too late to begin an exercise program to help prevent prediabetes from developing into full-blown Type 2 diabetes. There are all kinds of exercise methods and exercise programs. Choose one – or simply choose to walk a few minutes every single day.
Prediabetes is a warning sign that something must change as your body is not coping well with your current lifestyle. Ensure you take notice before prediabetes develops into type2. It will simply become harder to reverse when that happens.
